About Young Musicmakers’ Concert by finalists at the 2019 Eisteddfod
Join us for an exciting musical event with these up and coming young talented musicians.
Eunice Cheng, Violin:
Eunice Cheng (17 yo) started learning violin when she was 3 and piano when she was 4, currently learning violin under Dr Evgeny Sorkin’s guidance. She participates in extracurricular music activities including as a church musician, volunteer performances at aged care facilities, and has been a part of the Sydney Conservatorium Rising Stars Program. Eunice achieved her LMusA with distinction on violin in 2018. Eunice was invited to perform at the Galston Concerts Young Performers Gala in 2018 and 2019. She was an ENCORE nominee for accelerated HSC Music 2 in 2018 and HSC Extension Music last year. In the 2019 Ryde Eisteddfod, Eunice won numerous prizes including the Open age solo strings and Richard Gill Solo Composition sections, and received the Edna Wilde Scholarship for Outstanding Instrumentalist. Last July, Eunice was honoured to perform as a featured violin soloist at the Sydney Opera House in the NSW Arts Unit PULSE Concert 2019. Eunice graduated Year 12 from James Ruse Agricultural High School last year and is currently studying Medicine at the University of New South Wales. She has just joined the NSW Doctors Orchestra and aspires to continue sharing the joy of music in her community.
Emma Diaz, Recorder/Oboe
Matthew Zhou, Percussion
16 years old Matthew Zhou is year 12 student from Turramurra high school. He was born with a genetic condition called Albinism and as a result he has significant vision impairment and is very sensitive to light and glare.
He plays percussion and piano and is a member of several bands and ensemble. Matthew has received prizes and trophies at Eisteddfods and Music Festivals. He was a soloist at NSW State Festival of Instrumental Music Concert 2014, 2016 and 2019, as well as a soloist in the Arts Alive Concert. He has twice been broadcast on Fine Music 102.5 as part of the Even Younger series. He accompanied Wicked star Lucy Durack at Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne Sidney Myer Music Bowl which broadcast live on channel nine on Christmas Eve 2014. He plays at many charity events including at The Albinism Fellowship of Australia Conference, the Women of Achievement lunch, Australian Taiwan Women's Association 25th Anniversary Charity Gala and 2018 Black & White Ball in supporting Vision Australia. He also performed at a concert to raise fund for Bear Cottage.
He was invited to perform at 2017 and 2019 NSW School Spectacular “SpecFest”.
