MARU TARANG
(Jeff Lang, Bobby Singh, Asim Langa & Bhungar Maganiyar)

"Rajasthani desert folk traditions meet modern folk/blues from Australia."

In 2011, deep in the deserts of Rajasthan, celebrated Australian blues guitarist-vocalist Jeff Lang and tabla master Bobby Singh met Asin Khan Langa (sindhi sarangi/vocals) and percussionist Bhungar Khan Manganiyar (khartals). Initiated by the Rajasthan International Folk Festival, this remarkable l collaboration has gone on to span genres, continents and styles.

In the resulting musical conversation, Maru Tarang (Ripples of the Desert) blends ancient Rajasthani folk music with blues-infused Australian music. Without a spoken language in common, these remarkable artists have nevertheless developed a shared musical tongue that is both richly layered and deftly eloquent. Their virtuosic repertoire includes traditional Rajasthani songs refreshed by Aussie roots; seminal blues by Robert Johnson enriched by Indian flavours; soulful expressions that develop through deep, original and fiery improvisations and compositions. It’s a music that is both exhilarating and hypnotic in equal measure.

Maru Tarang has performed in India (Jodhpur RIFF), Scotland (Celtic Connections), Spain (Womex) and Australia (Parramasala). The group released its debut album ‘Blue City’ earlier in 2015, and the press said….

“Hypnotic grooves that ebb and flow… complex, ancient tales that leap and fall like flickering flames.” - Time Out

“Rising, twisting, gaining in volume and vigour, like a slowly waking cobra.”
- Alt Media

“Virtuosic musical conversations involving thrilling exchanges.” – Rhythms

Jeff Lang is of course one of Australia’s best known and most original blues/roots guitarists. He had released over a dozen best-selling solo albums, and a number of collaborative recordings. Lang won ARIA awards for his 2002 album Rolling Through This World with American bluesman Bob Brozman (Best Blues and Roots album); Djan Djan (Best World Music album 2011) with Bobby Singh and Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate); and for his 2012 solo release Carried in Mind (Best Blues and Roots album). Jeff was also presented with the National Film and Sound Archive’s 2012 National Folk Recording Award.
“Jeff Lang has been the country’s best roots guitarist, a sort of Aussie Ry Cooder, for 20-odd years.” - Rolling Stone Australia

One of the most experienced tabla players in Australia, Bobby Singh is a highly respected musician in the World music scene. Born and raised in England, Bobby spent a great deal of his childhood in Mumbai India where he was taught traditional Indian classical music by Pandit Nikhil Ghosh and his senior disciple Aneesh Pradhan. His work has straddled the divide between tradition and modernity, playing alongside such luminaries as Grammy Award winner V.M. Bhatt, John Butler, Slava Grigoryan, Sandy Evans and Joseph Tawadros. His cross-cultural groups have included the The Bird, Circle Of Rhythm and Djan Djan.
“Bobby Singh simply blew everyone away with his masterful playing…” – Revolver
